David: Great Video of Flying in France
Just came across your website. Was reading your helpful page on flying to France (thanks for that), and watched the video.
What/where is the mountain-top strip you landed on near the beginning? Looks really exciting. Perhaps you could add a short description under the video?
Hi David,
I'm glad you like the site. The mountain strip is Peyresourde in the Pyrenees. I have now added a caption to the video - there was one if you went to it from the 'Videos' section on the front page, but not if you got to it via the 'Flying in France' page.

Alasdair

David Beckley: Dordogne trial flights
Hi Alasdair,
I found you site by chance when searching for flying clubs in the Dordogne.
I have 12 hours instruction behind me here in Norfolk,, but for various reasons have decided not to continue. However I would like to find a Club where I could have a few hours flying during a holiday and wonder if you could recommend any in the region, particularly if they have English instructors.
Many thanks
Hi David,
I don't personally know anything about any of the clubs in the Dordogne but perhaps somebody else here will. I suggest you post the question in the Flyer and PPRuNe forums too which might generate a more immediate response.
I would be a nice place to learn to fly!
Regards,
Alasdair

Mike Walling: Great site and a good read
Hi Alasdair, I enjoyed reading of your adventures in France and Scandinavia. Some interesting content and certainly food for thought. I'm currently resident in Saudi Arabia - quite a contrast in climate!
Where have you been in 2011 and I hope there any more stories to post?
Happy flying

Fif: flying-in-france.com
Bonjour,
I wanted to introduce my new iPhone application:
http://www.flying-in-france.com/
Best regards
Benoit
Hi Benoit,
Thanks for the update. It looks as if this is the English version of F-AERO CAVOK which I already use. It's a great tool when you're away flying and I'm happy to recommend your work.

Mike Causer: Brive - la Roche
Alasdair,
A friend with a CTSW wants to get near Brive. Have you any reports on the new Brive Vallée de la Dordogne airport from the microlight point of view? Also is the private field at Pompadour usable with prior permission?
Thanks for any help.
Hi Mike,
I flew into the former Brive airfield (Brive la Roche) which has now closed, but I have not been to the new Vallée de la Dordogne airport (Brive Souillac - LFSL) yet so I can't speak from personal experience. The AIP entry does not say anything about microlights being excluded. Looking at my 2011 charts it does have a class D CTR so your friend will certainly need a transponder to get in.
The airport has a web site with contact details at http://www.aeroport-brive-vallee-dordogne.com/en so I'd suggest getting in touch with them to check. I have normally found that getting in touch to request permission in advance does the trick if it's not clear whether ULMs are permitted or not.
As far as Pompadour (LF1927) goes I'm afraid I know nothing about it other than what I can see on Navigeo at http://www.navigeo.org/LF1927. There's a contact number there, so give that a call and see what the situation is.

Clive James: Hello Alasdair
How's tricks mate? Love the site found it via the Flyer forum. A fair amount of work to put something like this together so well done.
Didn't get across to France last year because of the chengeable weather but this year we have already been to Frieds, used Calais, Nancy on the way out and Metz Lorraine and Amiens on the way back. Hoping to do a bit more as the year progresses and collect a few more fields you already have in your book.
Was reading your E mail with the hotels near by airfields info only last week scheming another trip.
I recall Julian wanted to get Condom in his book, don't know if he did but I will try and pick it up myself some time to remember the old boy!
Bon Vol, Regards, Clive
Hi Clive,
Good to hear from you and glad you like the site. I created a Google map of places to stay near airfields with contributions from various people including Julian of course. It still exists at http://goo.gl/maps/DTbu
May try to get down to Ile d'Yeu next month - always a nice spot!
All the best,
Alasdair

Howard Rutherford: Chalon sur Saone
Very nice airfield (Chalon Champforgeuil LFLH) just south of Beaune on the Cote Challonaise. Very friendly indeed - we diverted for weather first visit and have had two further trips since - ATC even lent us their car last time. All the usual mod cons - decent runway and parallel grass strip. About 4 miles out of town - Chalon has an island full of restaurants ( 40 at the last count ) - so if you like good Burgundy wine and foie gras it is a must destination.
Like the site very much.
Thanks for that Howard - it's always interesting to hear good recommendations. I have flown into Beaune (LFGF) a couple of times but never Chalon so I should add that to my list!

Graham: Good site
Good site Alasdair, all of the information in one place and some good advice into the bargain.
Just one small observation, the links to the GAR forms (both types) are missing from the Flying to France page which is a shame as I need a copy of those for this weekend's flight to LFAT!
Cheers
Graham
Thanks for pointing that out Graham - the links are now fixed. Hope your trip went well!

Roy: Airfields map
Alasdair,
Great site thank you. Has anything changed in the last 4 weeks, I am unable to load the airfields! the map loads but no symbols now.
Any help greatly received. Thanks Roy
Hi Roy,
Thanks for alerting me to that. The problem was at my end: two digits transposed was all it took! Everything should be working again now.
Thanks for the kind words about the site too.

Alasdair

Shaun Mckiernan: Flying to France
Hi Alasdair,
Thanks for putting this great site together. My brother and I flew to Abbeville in France last week in a CT2K, G-CBIE. Your site was a great resource. I had planned on flying further into France but unfortunately, the weather had other ideas, so instead we hired a car & drove to Paris. That was throroughly enjoyable. The highlight of the trip for me has to be flying over the English Channel. That was on a par with completing my first successful cross country trip!
I would love to one day fly to Peyresourde, but I think it'll be a long while before I feel confident enough to pull something like that off.
Thanks again for putting together this great site and I love the flying in France video you put together, fantastic!
Regards,
Shaun
Thanks Shaun! I passed through Abbeville myself in my CT2K just under a fortnight ago, stopping for lunch on the way to l'Ile d'Yeu. We came back via the Cherbourg / Isle of Wight route on Thursday. Cherbourg is a handy supply point for wine etc. when Luc and Edith's café and shop in the terminal is open. Alasdair.

Jenny: Libourne again
This is such a useful site, I've booked it to browse at leisure. Thanks for putting all the info together.
And, lookee here, what do I see? My homebase mentioned by Huw Evans - Libourne, LFDI!
Couldn't agree more, it's a very friendly place with a great restaurant, and only 10 minutes to St. Emilion...
Don't forget to say hello next time, Huw, and anyone else flying in from the UK
Thanks for the positive comments - I obviously need to add Libourne to my list of places to go! Alasdair
